Getting Started

Contact us to arrange a free ‘taster’ session at a time to suit you. We will spend an hour in the clubhouse in Bayhead Street, discussing all you need to know.

Sizing

We measure your hand to get the right size of bowl to suit you.

Grip We can show you how to hold the bowl...
Delivery and how to deliver the bowl properly, either on the green or inside on the carpet depending on the weather.
Bias The bias of the bowl when you deliver it, will decide if the bowl goes to the left or to the right, it is your first check every time you play bowls.

The weight (or strength) of your delivery will decided if your bowl is too long or too short, or preferably right on the jack. Time and practice will achieve consistency and that is the same for all of us.

Stance When playing bowls, we always stand on a rubber bowling mat, both feet normally on the mat, or one foot off the mat if you need to change your stance to maintain your balance.
Rinks The bowling green is divided into six rinks, and we decide first if we are playing singles, pairs, triples or rinks (4 players). The most popular is triples which consists of the Skip, the Lead player and the Second player (the Skip plays last in every game). In triples each player has three bowls.

Please remember you can play as often or as seldom as you wish. Your skill takes time to develop and a sense of humour is more important than winning or losing.
